Kid-Friendly Farms on the Rogue Valley Farm Tour

What to know about visiting the Rogue Valley Farm Tour with children

The 2024 Rogue Valley Farm tour gives families in Southern Oregon the opportunity to take a FREE behind the scenes tour of farms and ranches in Jackson and Josephine Counties. Participating farms open their doors and offer a closer look at what their farms produce. There are 29 farms on the tour this year. Over half of the farms plan to offer kid-friendly activities!

Where is the Rogue Valley Farm Tour

The 2024 Rogue Valley Farm tour takes place at 29 farms and ranches across Southern Oregon. The tour runs Sunday July 14 from 10am- 3 pm. The tour is self-guided. You select which farms you want to visit and drive yourself from one to the next. I’ve linked the brochure to download so you can see what each farm has to offer and where it is located. Some farms will be open during later hours, so be sure to read through the brochure closely. The farms offering kid-friendly activities have a special symbol indicating this next to their description.

What to Expect

This Summer has been brutally hot, and this Sunday will be no exception. Pack plenty of water, wear hats and sunscreen, and bring personal fans if you have them. Wear comfortable shoes that are ok to get dirty. You’ll be walking through a farm and there’ll be dirt, possibly mud, and if its an animal farm there might be additional obstacles to avoid stepping in ;-) Bring cash if you plan on purchasing food or other farm products. Most places accept cards but cash helps the farmers keep prices low and avoid card fees. Some farms welcome you to bring your picnic blankets to enjoy lunch while you’re there. Its a good idea to pack some ice in a cooler too especially if you’re purchasing items directly at the farms.

The Rogue Valley has a large variety of farms, so it won’t be hard to find more than one you want to visit. Make note right now that these farms can be remote and far apart. You will not have a cell phone or gps signal once you arrive at some of them. Its important to load directions and at least screenshot them ahead of time so you know how to get from one farm to the other. Ask me how I know this from last year’s journey LOL.

A closer look at visiting a farm with kids in Southern Oregon

I would love to be able to visit all 29 farms in person. There’s just no way to do that all in one day even— if it wasn’t triple digits and even if I didn’t have a young child tagging along.

Last year my family got to pet the Alpacas at Lone Ranch in White City Oregon, see the dairy cows at The Creamery in Grants Pass Oregon, and grabbed lunch at Dunbar Farms in Medford Oregon. All of these were big hits. Note: The Alpaca farm is closed due to heat/ smoke this year.

I know the heat has families a bit more restricted this year. So my top kid-friendly recommendation for this year is Lane Creek Reserve in Central Point- and I promise I’m not just saying that so I can have an excuse to make their homemade cinnamon rolls tomorrow’s breakfast. Lane Creek Reserve has actually invited two other local farms to join them for the farm tour. So its basically three farms in one visit, and with this heat I’m excited about multi-tasking.

A herd of cows at Lane Creek Reserve

Lane Creek Reserve is located at 5751 Old Stage Rd Central Point, Oregon. Their cinnamon rolls have quite a following, but they also have lots of other goodies in the farm stand: granola, jams, pickled stuff, cookies, garlic, squash, eggs- all organic and soy free (Facebook | Instagram).

Lane Creek Reserve has a ton of farm animals. If your kid is like mine, the first thing they want to do at a farm is see the animals. They’ve got cows, pigs, sheep, and chickens! Definitely enough to get through a respectable amount of Old MacDonald had a farm…. They even have a pollinator scavenger hunt activity for the kids to learn about what role pollinators play in our food. Tours are at 11 and 1.

A glamping tent at Lane Creek Reserve

Lane Creek Reserve even offers Glamping at their farm! I’m not a camper, but their glamping set up does look pretty sweet. Go check it out while you’re there.

Not So Mini Farm will be there with the absolute sweetest Jersey heifer in the world, Button. Button loves pets and scratches, so if your kid wants to meet a cow Button is a great one to start with. They’ll have bread, jams, raw milk yogurt, and sugar scrubs. They’ll also have pulled pork sliders and yogurt parfaits for purchase. (Facebook )

Fluery Farm will also be there selling fresh cut flower bouquets. She offers farm fresh flowers June-October at her farm stand, and you can even get a flower subscription for your home or business. Her social media is gorgeous so I’m excited to see the flowers in person (Facebook | Instagram).

Which ever farm you end up visiting, I hope your kids love getting out to see a working farm. When I was a child, my grandparents were farmers. Same for my husband. I have such wonderful memories of that farm. Life gets busier and more complicated with every generation. I love all the wonderful opportunities my kid has that didn’t exist for me, but sometimes its just really nice to be able to give your kids the same experiences you had, even if its just a one day visit.
